This month it will be Matisse in Morocco, as it is my country of birth and one of my very favorite and inspiring artist/mentor/teacher!!
"Although Matisse spent only a few months in Morocco, his experiences apparently remained vividly with him for the rest of his long life.../...As it did for Delacroix, North Africa liberated his imagination. Matisse looked instead at the foliage, at the designs of the buildings and the textiles, and most of all at the quality of light, and he found a repertory of forms and colors that matched his decorative impulse. Decoration in Morocco was not like decoration in France. It was not secondary to an image; it was the principal subject. By painting the patterns and flowers and costumes he saw around him, Matisse realized that he could elevate decoration to something weightier and more evocative than it had been in certain of his earlier works.Clearly, Morocco remained for Matisse not simply a country of colorful characters and stirring landscapes but also a place of spirituality and mystery.
Teaching how Picasso, Klimt, Matisse, Guaughin, Van Gogh, Degas and many more have mastered there own technics, could only be done by going into the whole process of copying their masterpieces.
I have done that for the past 18years with many aspiring artists or just participants who wished to play with art and overtime I am delighted to see how quickly one learns this way and in a very short time
Classes usually last 3hours as one masterpiece is explored. Some can be finished at home , everyone's rhythm is unique.
We all started from somewhere, there are no beginner nor advanced levels. Every masterpiece brings us back to our beginner level, only differently because we know we can do it thanks to the previous masterpiece , taking us one step higher on the ladder of our own skill's "mastery".
Art and creativity demand from us full concentration, inner vision, connection to our imagination, inspiration and muse. These meditative workshops work best when we go inward and keep our outer communication to the minimum. It is rare to have this opportunity to spend time with self, within a group and create something unique in a collective way. Silence and meditation are very much encouraged.
I always play soft or music inspiring the workshop topic in the background so that the session is an opportunity to relax as well. I am sharing one of my favorite one below.
